Project Abstract
In 2007 the quantity of biodegradable municipal wastedisposed of to landfill increased by 4% to 1475077tonnes in Ireland. This was at variance with the 2010target of 967433 tonnes set by the Council Directive onthe Landfill of Waste (1999/31/EC) (the i'Landfill Directivei)(European Council 1999) and demonstrates that despiteconcerted action over the last number of years Irelandis moving further from meeting its obligations under thedirective. Full implementation of the National Strategy forBiodegradable Waste is increasingly urgent given that thefirst target year of 2010 requires a reduction in landfillingof biodegradable municipal waste of over 550000 tonnesfrom current levels.Table A summarises the components of biodegradablewaste generated and recovered in 2007 and highlightsthat with the exception of textiles organic waste had thelowest recovery rate (8.6%) of any biodegradable wastefraction.
