Project Abstract
Tackling the problem of eutrophication in fresh watersis at the top of the agenda for the implementation of theWater Framework Directive (WFD) in Ireland. One majorpressure is phosphorus loading from diffuse sources. Therefore there is a need to apply appropriate measuresto reduce the diffuse phosphorus pollution at a catchmentscale in many river basin districts (RBDs). As implementingthese measures disturbs the existing system in thecatchment it is important to be able to predict theirimpact. This requires the use of a reliable mathematicalmodel to represent the system. Catchment modelshave become an essential component of sustainableecosystems modelling and are now used in a much widerrange of socio-economic ecologic applications. This studycontributes to this subject by developing a state-of-theartadaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) basedon a suite of two new diffuse phosphorus (P) models: (i)the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system phosphorus(ANFISP) model and (ii) the neuro-fuzzy national P model.
