Project Abstract

The IMP project is about further developing the critical analytical capacity that has been created in Ireland through EPA funded initiative, and applying that capacity in response to national policy and modelling priorities. Those priorities will include management of, and response to, environmental challenges principally in the context of climate and air; the negotiation of appropriate and feasible environmental targets; and the broader advancement and enhancement of national and international research agendas in this field. The IMP team is a small but extremely capable research unit in this area and has a proven track record of timely and professional performance in respect of delivering on agreed outcomes. The proposed project will continue to research and develop this dynamic system for use in an Irish context. Significant events in the next two years in this area will include the revision of the European thematic strategy on air pollution, potential infringement proceedings for NOx non-compliance under the NEC Directive, and the commencement of annual review for GHG emissions in the non-traded sectors under the EU's effort sharing agreement. The IMP project work will ensure that the GAINS Ireland system is primed to support these challenges whilst also advancing the ambitious research plan.
