Project Abstract
Please note this proposal contains an integrated proposal for area 5.2. The IMP Ireland research project will deliver a calibrated and customised integrated assessment modelling (IAM) system for Ireland. The project will develop and implement a refined national version of the GAINS model, consistent with the latest updates that will be made by IIASA over the coming years. This will enable detailed national analyses of Air Quality and Greenhouse gas emissions under a range of policy scenarios, whilst ensuring that output remains suitably consistent with the International standard of the model used in negotiation phases. Alongside this development, IMP Ireland will prototype extensions and tools for an extended GAINS Ireland model. This work will provide improved systems and tools for engagement with the model as well as modifications to improve the model?s representation of the Irish case. This latter development work will be structured to assist and contribute to IAM research on the international stage so that revisions can be worked through to the core of the revised international models. The IMP Ireland project will also conduct a detailed refinement of the TREMOVE IImodel modules for Ireland to enable detailed national evaluation of transport emissions in Ireland and the impact of a range of policy scenarios on associated emissions. The project will link nationally with a number of relevant feeder projects and will incorporate national research strands into the work plan, thereafter feeding back to the national policy and strategy process. The team behind IMP Ireland have extensive national and international networks in this specific field and have successfully managed this field of research in Ireland over the last number of years. As a result they are ideally placed to successfully deliver on all of the project objectives as Ireland progresses this area to an advanced level.
