Project Abstract

The LED-micro-photochemistry project aims to develop a novel resource- and energy-efficient approach in synthetic chemistry. It combines established techniques in organic photochemistry and microchip engineering with LED technology. Commercially available micro-reactors will be tested for homogeneous (dwell device, mikroglas) and heterogeneous (falling film, IMM) photochemical transformations in order to evaluate their feasibility. Smaller microfluidic chips coupled with LED-panels will be furthermore designed and constructed. LEDs will be investigated as novel, miniaturized light sources. To demonstrate the superiority of micro-photochemistry, a series of model transformations will be performed and compared to conventional techniques using Rayonet chamber reactors. Light penetration profiles will furthermore be established for irradiations in micro-channels and conventional Schlenk flasks.
