Project Abstract
This project aims to provide a critical review of state of the art when it comes to food waste prevention, the use of behavioural nudges for change in this regard, and the development of intervention modes that can be applied to ensure achievement of Ireland's food waste targets. By examining the longitudinal impacts of current Stop Food Waste interventions, as well as assessing the effectiveness of bespoke trials, this research will provide policy makers, stakeholders and practitioners with a clear overview of food waste prevention opportunities for Ireland to apply. The qualitative data provided through investigation of the Stop Food Waste Challenge, as well as other types of interventions (e.g. interactions at events and festivals) will allow a review of these modes of interaction as nudges for change. This information, allied to a state of the art review, will be used to identify a series of intervention models for assessment. By applying different and focused levels of interaction, and supporting this with analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, the project will provide policy makers with a picture of the best opportunities for addressing Irelands food waste and ensuring cost-effective prevention in the future. This project aims to deliver the following outputs: Knowledge of best-practice behaviour-change-based food waste prevention interventions, with regard to implementation in Ireland. Knowledge of the effectiveness of different engagement modes in reducing actual amounts of consumer food waste. A detailed analysis of the Stop Food Waste interventions and the Challenge A set of effectively designed consumer-focused food waste prevention interventions for Ireland A full set of optimal food waste reduction interventions in Ireland with appropriate recommendations for implementation. A communication programme through which relevant stakeholders will be informed about the project and its results. Several outputs will be produced, and the knowledge gained through the project will be communicated for a minimum of twelve months following its completion. A well managed project that will proceed smoothly with good communication levels, an open and transparent culture of co-operation between partners and between the partnership and the Steering Committee and the EPA. On-time and on-budget delivery of all the deliverables, reports etc. outlined below.
