Project Abstract
Officers within the EPA noted the need to inform the public about the risks (or lack thereof) from electromagnetic radiation and the challenges associated with assessing community awareness without biasing perceived risk. This project aims to establish levels of concern about non-ionising radiation in the general population and specific gaps in comprehension and/or false beliefs. To avoid any potential “Hawthorne effect” (i.e., changes in responses attributed to simply being asked to
respond), the target risk will be embedded within a larger study about environmental risks more generally. The benefit to this approach is that the study will provide baseline levels of perceived risk and understanding for multiple environmental risks under the EPA’s remit.
