Project Abstract
The recent Climate Action Plan 2019 outlined several targets including a target to reduce management intensity on 40,000ha of carbon rich grasslands by 2030. (Dept. of Communications, Climate Action & Environment, 2019). Effective management of these carbon rich landscapes will become a national priority in order to achieve Ireland’s commitments to cut carbon emissions. Peatland rewetting/restoration/rehabilitation is one of several nature-based strategies that can be used to effectively address and reduce national GHG emissions. Therefore, there is an urgent need to identify grasslands that are located on these drained peat soils. The Bog Commissioner’s Maps represents and accurate baseline data of peatland extent before widescale drainage and degradation. The RePEAT project will use advanced digital and geospatial techniques to extract data from the Bog Commissioner’s Maps and use it to identify the precise location and area of grasslands (and other land use types) that can be found on former peatlands (i.e., carbon rich soils that have undergone land use change). This will facilitate much more accurate assessments, monitoring and management of these systems aiding the mitigation of national GHG emissions.
