Project Abstract
The main objective of this research project is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the solid fuel residential heating market in Ireland. Within this a strong focus will be placed on providing accurate data for the use of non-traded fuels particularly wood (fallen trees, discarded furniture) and sod peat. The development of a new data set based on a survey of households will be the primary contribution. This data set will include information on the type of solid fuel that households use (traded and non-traded), the quantities in which solid fuels are used and the solid fuel heating appliance or technology that households possess. The factors that influence choices regarding residential heating and the barriers to transitioning from solid fuels will also be examined using this survey as well as existing data sets. Semi-structured interviews and workshops will be undertaken to develop an understanding of peoples lived experiences of solid fuel. The survey results and analysis of existing data sets will provide the basis for developing policy instruments that could be used to promote the transition away from solid fuels.
