Project Abstract

This study presents results of an investigation of aerosol optical depth (AOD) overMace Head on the west coast of Ireland and the North Atlantic region. The AOD isan important aerosol parameter for the estimation of the direct aerosol effect onclimate. Estimations of the direct aerosol effect remain highly uncertain. One of thelargest uncertainties as highlighted in this thesis is the nature of the role of the naturalsea spray aerosol in the climate system. The AOD associated with clean marine air4masses therefore was a key focus of the current work. Satellite observations provide aunique perspective from which to observe the spatial variation of aerosol properties onlarge scales. They are particularly pertinent in remote ocean regions where groundbasedaerosol measurements are scarce or unavailable. An extensive validation studywas undertaken to assess the performance of two alternative aerosol satellite retrievalmethods over the northeastern Atlantic region.
