Project Abstract

The PhD research project focuses on the study of young people reception of online audiovisual media related to the environmental challenges of the so-called sustainable development. From the perspective of reception studies, it targets social media consumption of video contents by both Irish and Uruguayan young people between 18 and 24 years old of different geographic and socioeconomic segments. Interviews, focus groups and social media digital ethnography in both countries will serve to explore new media influence in their awareness, understanding and valuation of local and global environmental issues. Uruguay and Ireland belong to the global North and the global South respectively, while being far from the extremes of the continuum of human, economic and ecological development: they could be considered semi-peripheries within the world system, with fewer barriers to social change. The findings will contribute to the identification of challenges and opportunities in the task of communicating the complexity of sustainability issues and the interdependence of its dimensions at different scales.
