Project Abstract
We propose to survey the extent of active and degraded blanket peatlands in Ireland and to carry out GHG flux measurements at our pristine blanket peatland in Glencar County Kerry and at two differently degraded blanket peatlands in County Kerry. Specifically we propose to: 1. To survey the extent of active blanket peatlands and the extent and degree of degraded blanket peatlands in Ireland. 2. For compiling the total carbon balance, we will continue to carry out eddy covariance flux measurements of CO2, weekly chamber measurements of CH4 and N2O and continuous measurements of stream DOC and continuous environmental and micromet measurements at the pristine blanket peatland in Glencar, County Kerry. Note that this work is ongoing since 2002. 3. To carry out chamber flux measurements of CO2, CH4 and N2O at two degraded blanket peatland sites in County Kerry (one a cutaway blanket bog and the second an overgrazed blanket bog). 4. To analyse the data sets and compare the total carbon balance of pristine and degraded blanket peatlands at the three sites, as well as to identify the key environment, climate and management drivers of the fluxes and changes in fluxes within each site and between the sites.
