Project Abstract
Since the foundation of our state the inner city of Dublin has been in a constant state of change. Initially Dublin witnessed large population losses from the core coupled with population increases in outlying areas. Pre 1990 the inner city seemed to be in perpetual decline as an ever-increasing share of its population was migrating to outlying areas. In addition a disproportionate amount of relatively young and affluent individuals were migrating to outlying areas which meant that the population in the inner city was an ageing one with a high concentration of poverty. This began to change however at the start of the 1990s as the inner city attracted huge numbers of new residents back into new apartment developments. Utilising small area population statistics provided by the CSO the paper will analyse and record some of the many physical demographic and social changes witnessed in Dublinis inner city since the start of the 1990is. Additionally utilising ArcView GIS numerous maps are produced which visually illustrate the changing trends evident in Dublinis inner city. The paper concludes by discussing the challenges presented by these change processes for policy-makers.
