Project Abstract
It is hypothesised that the way we plan and design our communities and transport systems matters for sustainable transport behaviours, human health and the natural environment. For example, the rise in obesity and overweight among Irish children, the number of yearly deaths due to car crashes, and Ireland?s increased carbon emission may be associated - in part - with an increase in car-dependent suburban estates and the lack of viable public transport. Instead of an individual problem, Ireland may have a planning problem. This research proposal tests this hypothesis; the end goal is to provide evidence and measures to better inform the planning process and to suggest sustainable models by determining the extent to which planning effects the environment, transport behaviours and human well-being.
