Project Abstract

The project goal is to establish a nationwide car-pooling co-ordination centre which employees of participating companies can use. Using an advanced IT system employees can phone/email/text the centre and look for a car share on their route to work. A software scheduling package will collate all the information where the person is located where they want to go what time they wish to travel and the time they need to be at the location and will match it with a vehicle travelling the same direction and with the same requirements. The project also aims for the centre to be used by municipalities to cut dead running on vehicles e.g. pick up co-ordination for ambulances delivering non-emergency patients. The overall goal of the project is to reduce the amount of emissions from cars and reduce traffic congestion by increasing vehicle occupancy. The project aims to have a total of 10 companies participating in the scheme at the end of year one. Carlow Kilkenny and Tipperary South Riding Rural Transport Limited was established in 2001 to address inadequate rural transport. Its business of rural transport co-ordination will be complemented by the car-pooling co-ordination centre.
