Project Abstract
NOx and Particulate Matter (PM) are two of the more intractable pollutants emittedfrom diesel engine exhausts. NOx contributes to photochemical smog and acid rainwhile PM can be carcinogenic and also contributes to global warming throughdecreasing the albedo of Arctic and Antarctic ice. Neither is removed from theexhaust stream using conventional three way catalysts and other technologies arerequired.This research focuses on two technologies for removing these pollutants fromemissions to atmosphere from diesel-powered vehicles i.e. NOx Storage andReduction and Particulate filtration.Chapter 1 offers a brief description of catalysis with applications in environmentalprotection. Advantages and disadvantages of lean burn engines are brieflydiscussed with a focus on the nature of chemical species produced during fuelcombustion.A detailed description of the mechanism of formation environmental and healthconcerns related to two of the pollutants emitted by lean burn engines (NitrogenOxides (NOx) and carbonaceous (PM)) can be found in section 1.4 and 1.5respectively.
