Project Abstract
The increase in the area of hedgerow (due to REPS) and expansion of non-forest woodland patches across the landscape together with the sink activity of existing hedgerows could be significant. However, reporting for these management activities under the LULUCF have not been possible in the past due to; a) a lack of national spatial or geographic information systems to detect changes in the area of hedgerows and non-forest woody biomass over time and; b) no inventory information on biomass stock changes in these land cover types. Remote sensing technological advances now offer the possibility of developing a national reporting system for hedgerows and non forest woodlands. The objectives of the project are to evaluate the use of LIDAR technology for assessing biomass change in hedgerow and woodland features. Once the application of the technology is clearly demonstrated, a scoping assessment and guidelines for a national LIDAR survey will be delivered. Specific tasks include: Processing of LIDAR data based on a pilot study Modelling hedgerow/tree biomass based on LiDAR data and limited field surveys Design and costing a sampling strategy for a national LiDAR survey using the available National resources
