Project Abstract
Illegal disposing of waste is a growing problem in many OECD countries including Ireland. This project seeks to address one element in the waste management cycle namely the tracking of waste from collection to delivery in a transparent yet verifiable fashion. Tracking will occur at three levels truck, container and waste itself. In the first two levels, a combination of technologies will be harnessed. In the latter case, an innovative solution will be developed for tagging waste such that its source can be tracked. A pioneering prototype application demonstrating these three scenarios will be developed. The outputs of WAIST will include:1. A pioneering prototype waste tracking application that will serve as a model for local authorities and others charged with waste management under statutory law.2. A series of papers in international journals and conferences detailing various innovative aspects of the project.3. A Technical Report detailing the current state-of-the-art technologies for waste tracking (including an abridged version for policy and non-technical readers).4. A special issue of an international journal dedicated to Waste Tracking techniques & technologies.5. Capability building within the area of intelligent real-time tracking of waste shipments.
