Summary: This research aimed to clarify some aspects of the nature and consequences of the interaction between engineered nanoparticles and the environment.
This research aimed to clarify some aspects of the nature and consequences of the interaction between engineered nanoparticles and the environment. The research team have concluded that most nanomaterials tend not to be acutely toxic, unless the substances from which they are made are also toxic. Those that are acutely toxic can now be readily identified by screening tests.
The outcomes of the project were significant in framing the advice and explanations given to the European Commission and the public, most particularly in pioneering the issues for larger programs to follow. It began earlier than most other similar studies, and had significant impact on the opinions currently given on the website of the Directorate-General for the Environment, and now being widely accepted internationally in the EU, US, OECD and beyond.
