EPA-funded environmental research provides essential scientific support for environmental policy development, implementation and broader decision making. Since 1994, the EPA has funded research that has increased national understanding of our environment, the challenges it faces and responses to these. It has also developed high-quality research capacity and supported innovation that is internationally respected.
The EPA Research Programme is a Government of Ireland initiative funded by the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications. The current Research Strategy runs until 2020. The EPA is currently preparing its new Research Strategy for the period from 2021 - 2030.
EPA Research 2030 is a 10-year high-level framework for research programming (2021-2030), designed to be agile, responsive and flexible. It sets out the broad structure and ambition for the EPA research activity for the next ten years. It will be implemented through supporting Thematic Research Priorities Assessments and Annual Research Calls, which will be developed in partnership with key stakeholders and at regular intervals to ensure ongoing relevance (at least three cycles over the 10 years). EPA Research 2030 implementation will also be supported by Action Plans, Communication & Knowledge Transfer Plans and Performance Reviews.
